Our lotions have no parabens nor do we use formaldehyde as a preservative.
We use Meiringspoort water in our lotions and the minute you use water; you need to use a preservative so that the lotion does not grow mould. Our water is boiled and everything used to make the lotions is sterilized but we do need to add a preservative. The preservative we use is Saliguard BDHA, made from Benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid. It has no parabens and is not tested on animals. Parabens is one of the most widely-used preservative in cosmetic and hair products. Recent studies have shown a relationship between the use of parabens and the increased likelihood of breast cancer.
“Parabens are known endocrine disruptors that can mimic oestrogen in the body. Several studies have shown that parabens can affect the mechanisms of normal breast cells and potentially influence their abnormal growth, leading to increased risk for breast cancer” –
Studies have shown that parabens may:
- increase cell growth
- decrease cell death
- increase factors associated with metastasis
- make tamoxifen less effective when administering chemotherapy
Check the labels of your beauty-care products and make sure they are paraben-free. various forms of parabens to look out for are:
- propylparaben (or propyl 4-hydroxylbenzoate),
- butylparaben (or butyl 4-hydroxylbenzoate),
- ethylparaben (or ethyl 4-hydroxylbenzoate)
- heptylparaben (or heptyl 4-hydroxylbenzoate),
- methylparaben (or methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate)
